I started woodturning in 2013 following my retirement from the Fire Service. My favorite pieces to turn include utilitarian items such as ice cream scoops, small bowls, bottle stoppers, screwdrivers and lots of pens. Always a bit curious, creative with a love of learning, I ventured into wood turning in 2018. From private mentoring, to Turn & Learn and classes in our community, I have learned the art and science of wood turning. Thanks to our wonderful club members for sharing their love of their craft with others.

I first started to turn wood in eighth grade shop class. I learned how to make a baseball bat and a couple of bowls. I didn’t turn for the next 20 years and then bought a real cheap lathe and made candlesticks out of branches. Went another 20 or 30 years and tried turning on a shop smith with mixed results. I finally bought a good sized Jet Lathe and joined the Cape Cod woodturners about 8 years ago. This hobby has provided me endless hours of fun as well as getting to know some great people in the club.

I studied and served as a Career and Technical Arts Instructor, and spent most of my career as a School Administrator and educational leadership consultant. While turning has been a hobby most of my life, retirement has allowed me the opportunity to begin focusing on developing my wood turning knowledge and skills. I enjoy the cognitive and technical aspects of turning and developing learning materials and opportunities to help others discover the joy of turning. My work includes bowls, lidded boxes, ornaments, and a variety of hollow forms and spindles.

After a long gap from my first turned object – a bowl in 7th grade shop – I acquired a lathe in 2021 and started to learn the craft with help from Turn and Learn, some mentoring sessions, and YouTube. I’m exploring as many different types of turnings as I can while I build my skills and look forward to giving back to the club as I settle into retirement from a career in computer technology.

I retired in 2012, after a 31 year career at PricewaterhouseCoopers largely spent in Europe and the Middle East (working as a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner). I finished my career as Managing Partner for operations in Central and Eastern Europe. I am late to the wonderful world of woodturning, having only started in February 2021.

I have been turning since 2012 after I bought a burl bowl for my son's anniversary. The turner invited me to a club meeting and I was hooked. I started on a Shopsmith but graduated to a real lathe. My interests include turning ornaments, hollowforms and segmented turning.

An Oceanographer by profession, Paul's deep-rooted interest in woodturning and the oceans descend from generations of shipwrights and woodworkers in his family tree. Woodturning since 2018, his abilities and interest in the craft have matured into a passion through the generous mentoring of other CCW club members. Exotic hardwoods, live-edge creations of all kinds, and bowls and platters (the bigger, the better) flow out of his workshop almost daily, along with the wood shavings.
