TOM GERHARD

President

Programs & AV Committees

After a long gap from my first turned object – a bowl in 7th grade shop – I acquired a lathe in 2021 and started to learn the craft with help from Turn and Learn, some mentoring sessions, and YouTube. I’m exploring as many different types of turnings as I can while I build my skills and look forward to giving back to the club as I settle into retirement from a career in computer technology.

SANDY ARNONE

Secretary & Newsletter editor

Newsletter Editor

I am self-described as a “crafty” person who loves to combine my interests in the fiber arts and woodcrafts. I started wood turning in 2018 and enjoy embellishing my projects with wood burning. I currently serve on the Club’s Program and the Instruction and Mentoring Committees. At club meetings, I can be found taking photos for Show and Tell, taking minutes, and notes on our many talented demonstrations. As editor of our monthly newsletter, I work as part of a team to bring updated information to our club members.

Always a bit curious, creative with a love of learning, I ventured into wood turning in 2018. From private mentoring, to Turn & Learn and classes in our community, I have learned the art and science of wood turning. Thanks to our wonderful club members for sharing their love of their craft with others.

DAVE ARNONE

Director

Membership & Mentor Coordinator, Program Committee Lead

I studied and served as a Career and Technical Arts Instructor, and spent most of my career as a School Administrator and educational leadership consultant. While turning has been a hobby most of my life, retirement has allowed me the opportunity to begin focusing on developing my wood turning knowledge and skills. I enjoy the cognitive and technical aspects of turning and developing learning materials and opportunities to help others discover the joy of turning. My work includes bowls, lidded boxes, ornaments, and a variety of hollow forms and spindles.

TOM PENDLETON

Vice-President

I AM EXCITED TO JOIN THE CAPE COD WOODTURNERS AS VICE-PRESIDENT FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. MY EXPERIENCE WITH WOODTURNING IS VERY RECENT AND CURRENTLY CONSIDER MYSELF A NOVICE TURNER. I OWN A MIDI RIKON LATHE WHICH ALLOWS ME TO TURN SMALLER PROJECTS. I LIKE TO TURN SMALL BOWLS, PENS, ICE CREAM SCOOPS, ROLLING PINS AND WHATEVER OTHER SMALL PROJECTS I CAN LATCH MY HANDS ONTO. I STARTED TURNING A LITTLE OVER 3 YEARS AGO AT THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF DAVE ARNONE. BEGINNING WITH THE INTRODUCTORY WOOD TURNERS COURSE AT THE CAPE COD CULTURAL CENTER AND THEN PARTICIPATING IN THE TURN AND LEARN PROGRAM HAS PROVIDED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC SKILLS TO CONTINUE MY EFFORTS. I HAVE ALSO BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE PROGRAM COMMITEE AND THE NOMINATION COMMITEE. I AM VERY ANXIOUS TO SEE WHERE THE NEXT TWO YEARS LEAD US AS WE MOVE FORWARD. I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM ANY AND ALL ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS AS WE CONTINUE TO GROW. I AM A RETIRED FEDERAL CONTRACTING OFFICER AND WORKED PRIMARILY WITH JOB TRAING AND EDUCATION FOR AT RISK YOUTH. MY WIFE PAM AND I ARE FORMER PEACE CORPS VOLUNTERS IN CENTRAL AFRICA – THE CONGO, WORKING AS TEACHERS. WE CURRENTLY RESIDE RIGHT DOWN THE POND FROM DAVE AND SANDY IN SOUTH YARMOUTH.

I finished my career as Managing Partner for operations in Central and Eastern Europe. I am late to the wonderful world of woodturning, having only started in February 2021.

STEVE ABBOTT

Director

Nominating Committee Chairman

I first started to turn wood in eighth grade shop class. I learned how to make a baseball bat and a couple of bowls. I didn’t turn for the next 20 years and then bought a real cheap lathe and made candlesticks out of branches. Went another 20 or 30 years and tried turning on a shop smith with mixed results. I finally bought a good sized Jet Lathe and joined the Cape Cod woodturners about 8 years ago. This hobby has provided me endless hours of fun as well as getting to know some great people in the club.

PAUL MATTHIAS

Director

Programs Committee

An Oceanographer by profession, Paul's deep-rooted interest in woodturning and the oceans descend from generations of shipwrights and woodworkers in his family tree. Woodturning since 2018, his abilities and interest in the craft have matured into a passion through the generous mentoring of other CCW club members. Exotic hardwoods, live-edge creations of all kinds, and bowls and platters (the bigger, the better) flow out of his workshop almost daily, along with the wood shavings.
